Statement on the Earthquake in Iran

CHICAGO - An estimated thirty thousand people were killed in the tragic earthquake that devastated the ancient city of Bam, Iran on December 26. At least thirty thousand people were also wounded. Hardly any buildings were left standing.

Those that survived are packing what little remains and leaving to find a new home. Estimates say at least 100,000 people have become homeless. One baby girl was found "alive" in her dead mother’s arms.

The Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan and all members of the Nation of Islam send condolences to the government and people of Iran on the loss of life and share their sorrows over this great tragedy.

Allah (God) says in the Holy Qur’an that no soul dies but by His Permission. He gives life and He is the ultimate cause of death. The only way that we can avoid the sting of death is if we were never born. Since we have come to birth, then all of us must taste of death at some time.

This in deed is a great trial for the people of Iran. Allah (God) says in the Qur’an that certainly He will try us with fear, hunger, loss of property, loss of life and diminution of fruit, but give good news to those who are patient and steadfast under trial.

We pray that Allah (God) will remove the burden of grief from the people of Iran and the families and friends of all those who lost their lives, and all of us who share their loss.

"Those who believe and are doers of good to others, there is no fear for them nor shall they grieve." —Holy Qur’an
